However, there is another way to consume images at home, which is similar to listening to the radio (or Spotify). If you want a digital frame that is also a TV, then there I Samsung's eye-wateringly expensive The Frame. For example, there is Meural's Canvas II, which is a dedicated image viewer with a high-quality anti-glare screen, a subscription to artwork, and motion detection to allow interaction. What that means is a dedicated display in a dedicated space, and unsurprisingly, a number of manufacturers have developed products targeting this market. It's more like a live performance where the individual can indulge themselves as much as they like. That might well be in your living room, but presenting them as a gallery would let people view them in their own time. So, don't do the same with photos! Rather, give yourself a gallery space where you can display your images for careful consumption and consideration. You don't buy Coldplay's latest album and then invite friends around to sit in your living room and listen to it. Finally, think of viewing the imagery as not too dissimilar to listening to music. While it might be a multi-function device, it can't do two things at once, so don't try to shoehorn a photo frame into something that is designed for a different purpose. Secondly, don't use your TV as a display. You need a display that is at least 4"圆" and preferably bigger, in the same way you would mount a photo in a frame. So, how do people really want to consume images (because, deep down, they actually want to)? Let's look at those three problems I noted above. It's plain and simple: nobody wants to sit and look at a stream of images they have little vested interest in. Uncle Jeffrey fell asleep back then, and it's not too different in today's Powerpoint version. When I say slideshow, not 85 slides in Powerpoint replete with every possible transition and sound effect, but one shot on Ektachrome and projected on to your living room wall. Thirdly, people don't actually want to view images! Think back to those stereotypical dinner parties in the 70s and 80s when your family and friends were invited around to watch a slideshow of your latest holiday. Even a seven-inch frame can seem a little pricey, particularly when producing a ten-inch print is less than a cup of coffee, and it never turns off and doesn't cost anything to run! Perhaps this highlights the main problem - no one currently buys a forty-inch screen just to look at photos. That seems pretty obvious, but if your main viewing device is your TV, then as soon as your daughter comes in to watch an episode of "The Next Step," or indeed "Game of Thrones," no more on-screen photos. Secondly, you can't watch TV and view images at the same time. Unfortunately, both the software (poorly designed and awkward to use) and hardware (cheap, plasticky, and, crucially, not networked) got in the way. They involve a synergistic dance between hardware and software so that it does what it's meant to do (display photos) without getting in the way. I followed that viewer up with a seven-inch Kodak frame and while it was bigger, it made you realize that digital albums were more than just pixels. Yes, the resolution was also low at only 1 MP, and the color reproduction only really a ballpark figure. That might have been quite a good idea for an iPod where you wanted the general gist of an album cover, but for viewing a person, they were poor, and for a group of people… well, just try recognizing an individual face from fifty-odd pixels. Actually, to be brutally honest, they were rubbish! I remember my first photo frame with a screen the size of an address label. Why is this?įirstly, the hardware wasn't up to scratch, with the displays not particularly good. But the curation of virtual photo albums for display in the living room? That appears to be sadly absent. Of course, large forty-inch digital displays are now mainstream, and you'll find them in many homes. Photos and information were the items of choice, so it's a short step to a curated slideshow of your own images (although curiously, we never see Marty shoot stills, only video). Of course, the reality of Lyon Estates in 2015 was a little different, but the direction of travel of digital displays was clear. It's Back to the Future 2 and Marty McFly - the future Marty McFly - walks into his lounge where large display screens show an idyllic rural scene. This’ll give you that letterbox, widescreen feel. So, to start, you can use the crop tool to add the classic cinematic widescreen bars to the top and bottom of your image. You can adjust the placement of your clip with the position tools to use in conjunction with the crop tool. This gives you a lot more control over the placement of your clip. Add the Crop Effect to the adjustment layer and perform your cropping from there. Create an adjustment layer and place it over your clip. If you’re looking for more precision, there’s a more customizable way to do it. These parameters are also animatable, so if you want a crop to creep in, you can set some keyframes to slip a crop into your clip. From there, you’ll have the ability to add the crop using the Left, Right, Top, and Bottom parameters. Let’s take a look.Īdding the crop effect is as simple as dragging “Crop” from the Effects panel onto your clip. In this video, demonstrates the many ways this simple tool can help you play with multiple images at once, give your video a more cinematic feel, and enhance the flow of your video. One of these effects is the crop tool - an extremely important tool in a video editor’s toolkit. If you want to be proficient in Adobe Premiere, you’ve got to familiarize yourself with the key effects you’ll be using every day. Here are six ways the crop effect in Adobe Premiere Pro will improve your filmmaking workflow - and yield more satisfying results. Unlike the Kobo Nia, the Amazon Kindle offers Audible and daily deals and unlimited reading for a monthly fee. The $99 price tag for a basic e-reader isn’t bad, but you have to consider price of books themselves. Without that the drain caused by accessing the store, the battery life would be a lot higher. While that may not seem like much, I was surfing the Kobo store for a little bit. I’ve read for 20 hours and going, and it’s only gotten to 60 percent battery life. Once I charged to full and grabbed all the books I wanted from the Kobo store, the battery held up quite well. However, with each perusal of the Kobo store, the battery life plunged and I found myself plugging in after only four days of use. Originally, I thought this would be good enough for hours because I wanted to read straight away. The Kobo Nia came with a 50 percent charge when I first pulled it out of its box. Battery Life: Solid after the first charge One of the coolest features I fell in love with was the OverDrive app on the Kobo Nia, which allows you to connect with an online library feature to check out books through the built-in Wi-Fi feature. However, based on the book features alone, if you enjoy supporting your local library, the Kobo Nia offers support and lending at your fingertips through fifteen different file compatibilities. If you’re an avid reader, it may be in your best interest to opt for a Kindle. There also is no option for unlimited reading like the Kindle Unlimited feature. And even then, their algorithms favor repeats of the same books across their limited store categories. I could glance at the various popular titles and purchase them, but I would be looking at a $5-10 price tag for most of these books. More annoying was the fact that unlike its competitor, the Kindle, the Kobo Nia only offered me one book deal per day. As much as I wanted to read Tony Horwitz’s latest novel, it was not on OverDrive, which meant I needed to purchase it. Once I got past the major titles, however, more obscure titles weren’t available. The Carta E Ink anti-glare display also offers a 1024x758 resolution that offers easy reading for the eyes. All of the customizations required a separate page. And, unlike the Kindle, I couldn't increase or decrease the font size by swiping my fingers. I had to go in separately to find a font from 12 styles and 50 font designs to find one that worked for me. It was easy to remember and kept accidental screen customization adjustments from occurring. As time went on, I really liked this feature. I thought I would loathe how I had to press the screen’s center. The Kobo instructed me to tap the center of the screen to open the menu-and, more importantly, customization options. Most of my e-reader experience revolved around pressing the top of the screen to open the menu whenever I needed to look through the bookstore, choose a new book, or check my place. At first, I thought this was really silly. Instead of pressing the top of the e-reader, the instructions told me to press in the middle to bring up the menu. What’s also great is that the display allowed me to brighten or dim the ComfortLight with a gentle swipe on the left-hand side of the screen. While it’s a single light and isn’t as fancy as the ComfortLight PRO the Kobo Clara and the other Kobo family e-readers offer, the ComfortLight is bright enough that I could read in the dark without disturbing my slumbering elderly cat, whom I dare not awaken. You’ll be able to read for hours and hold onto almost any book, but unlike the Kindle, you won’t be able to use the storage for audiobooks.Īs I kept playing around with the Kobo Nia, one of the features that struck me was the use of the device’s ComfortLight. At 6.3.x4.4x0.4 inches (HWD), it’s also an incredibly small e-reader, which is perfect for slipping into a backpack or a duffel bag. It doesn’t detract from its function, but it does look a little awkward. Its plastic black case is a little on the chunky side and opts for a more angular approach to its design. The Kobo Nia is incredibly light at only 6.06 ounces, making it easy to carry anywhere. I used the e-reader for weeks of testing, and enjoyed the easy OverDrive borrowing and general portability. With a ComfortLight display and 8GB of memory, it’s easy to take a library on the go. While it doesn’t come with a lot of fancy extras, the Kobo Nia functions as a basic, compact e-reader I can tuck into my bags on the fly. I love books, but when I’m packing my suitcases to go on vacation, I’m always looking to maximize space in my carry-on luggage. Keep reading for our full product review. We purchased the Kobo Nia e-Reader so our expert reviewer could thoroughly test and assess it. The CP-70 used strings like a real piano, instead of the metal reeds and tines found in Rhodes in Wurlitzers. A very specific one that hasn’t enjoyed the same level of reverence as the Rhodes or Wurlitzer, but isn’t without its merits. The other completely new instrument, CP-70 V, is a lot more straightforward. That’s not to say you can’t find a use for them in a pop song or jazz arrangement, but these are all about atmosphere and texture, and there’s a healthy dose of sounds that would only be appropriate in the tensest moments of a cosmic horror film.Īrturia V Collection X CP-70 V (Terrence O'Brien / Engadget) Like the rest of the Augmented series, Woodwinds, Brass and Grand Piano feel built especially with scoring in mind. (With the exception of a few presets that seem to come undone when faced with MPE input, at least.) You’re never going to convince anyone that the sounds coming out of it are from a flesh-and-blood woodwind ensemble, but the soft cinematic pads and leads you can coax out of it are compelling, especially when paired with an MPE controller like the Push or Seaboard Rise 2. Yet, Arturia pulls it off, largely by leaning into the synth side of things pretty strongly. I think Augmented Strings and Grand Piano are excellent, but have found little use for Brass and Voices so far, and woodwinds often feel like some of the most difficult acoustic instruments to get right in a sample library. I’ll admit to being somewhat skeptical of Augmented Woodwinds at first. Some specialist dictionaries do list authors-either a single overall author or editor, or an overall editor in combination with individual authors for the different entries. To cite an entry from a dictionary you accessed in print, omit the URL and add the edition, the publisher, and the page number of the entry. Citing a specific definition within an entry Use the abbreviation “def.” for “definition” and give the numbering that identifies the specific sense you’re citing. However, if you need to direct the reader to a specific sense of the word, you can do this using the numbering within the specific entry you’re citing. In the in-text citation, the title should be shortened to just the word itself-omit the part of speech and definition number here. If there’s no definition number, you can omit this part. If available, include the definition number in parentheses after the part of speech. MLA recommends abbreviating the part of speech, and presenting it in italics. Dictionaries usually identify the part of speech next to the word. There are eight parts of speech in English: noun, pronoun, verb, adjective, adverb, preposition, conjunction, and interjection. With explosives in hand you can now take on the boulder underneath the oak tree, open the Haze Lab, smash the glass in the Black Ant Lab, and open the Upper Yard Ascent. Once you’ve collected some Red Ant Eggs, immediately return to your camp to turn them into explosives, otherwise they can hatch and waste your effort! The Black Worker Ant is a creature found around the western sections of the yard and the sheds porch. Otherwise, check the corners of the large cavern at the bottom of the entrance tunnel and you should find a few Red Ant Eggs. Once you’re protected from the gas, you can take on just about any infected bug to collect some Fungal Growth from their corpse. You either need a gas mask made out of a Weevil Nose, four Gnat Fuzz, a Stinkbug Part and some Crude Rope, or the Toxicology Badge that you find during the Pond Lab quest. Infected bugs, like this infected ladybug, drop Fungal Growth You can see the poisonous cloud as green on the map. The recipe for explosives in Grounded is two Fungal Growths, one Red Ant Egg and four chunks of dry grass.ĭry grass is abundantly available and should be easy enough to find if you don’t have plenty already.įungal Growth is dropped by infected animals in the haze area in the southwest of the yard. You need explosives for many key quests in Grounded though, as well as access to new areas, so here’s what you need to do to craft some. While one of the key ingredients is readily available, the other two can be extremely tough to lay your tiny hands on - only appearing in specific areas of the yard that are either inhospitable or actively dangerous. That’s where explosives come into the scene in Grounded, Obsidian’s new pint-sized survival game, but they’re not as simple to make as other vital items. Nothing like the Orchid Mantis, the hardest boss in Grounded.Sometimes, even when you’re just dealing with woodlice and ladybugs, you just need to blow stuff up. Take down the minions first every time they spawn, try to keep the Assistant Manager staggered, and this boss will prove itself manageable. The boss itself only has two attacks, a long-ranged charge attack and a quick attack similar to the ARC.R's attacks, and so is only a true danger with its minions and the area effect towers. This will keep the laser and shock towers dormant for longer in the fight, reducing the factors the player needs to keep track of. The best strategy available to the player is to unlock and equip Grounded's Chopper Mutation, a successful stagger from an axe blow will cancel the Assistant Manager's ground pound attack, and it will go into a cooldown. Another ARC.R and two TAYZ.Ts will spawn in, and the Assistant Manager will use another ground pound to activate the four shock pillars in the room's corners. Phase 3 begins when the Assistant Manager is at 50% health. Phase 2 begins when the Assistant Manager's health is at 75%, an ARC.R and two more TAYZ.Ts will spawn in, and the boss will use a ground pound attack to activate the spinning laser pillar in the middle of the room. At the beginning of 1976 he was arrested by the Swedish government on allegations of tax evasion although the charge was later reduced from a serious crime to a matter of simple underreporting, Bergman suffered a mental breakdown and was institutionalized for several weeks. Ingmar Bergman conceived Autumn Sonata at an agonizing time in his career. The ending holds out a slender thread of hope for the future, but it's likely that mutual incomprehension will continue to plague them for the rest of their lives. In a series of increasingly painful confrontations Eva and Charlotte pick over the past, dredging up grievances and discontents galore. Adding to the stress is Charlotte's shock at learning that her other daughter, Helena, is living in Eva's house after years of treatment for an incurable degenerative disease that Charlotte prefers not to think about, much less face up to in person. Eva is greatly excited at the prospect of this reunion, but tensions start building immediately after Charlotte's arrival, as chance words and ill-considered remarks push emotional buttons and reopen old wounds, especially with Eva, who has felt neglected and overshadowed by her professionally preoccupied mother as long as she can remember. Ingrid Bergman plays her mother, Charlotte, a world-famous concert pianist who hasn't seen Eva for seven years but comes for a visit while recovering from a loss in her own life. Ullmann plays Eva, a shy and insecure woman who lives in rural Norway with her husband, Viktor, the pastor of a local church. This was the first and only joint venture of Bergman and Bergman, and despite disagreements on the set they proved to be an excellent team. The other is the performance by his near namesake, the great actress Ingrid Bergman, in her last theatrical picture before her death four years later. One is the provenance of the production, which Bergman filmed in forty days at a "primitive" studio facility in Norway during the exile from Sweden that he imposed on himself starting in 1976. Two other elements of the film are unusual, however. In addition, Bergman's wife at the time (named Ingrid Bergman!) was one of the production administrators Linn Ullmann, his daughter with Liv Ullmann, plays Liv's character as a child and his former wife Käbi Laretei, a concert pianist, recorded the Frédéric Chopin prelude that both main characters play during the story. It also reflects the remarkable talents of collaborators who had worked closely with him before: Liv Ullmann plays one of the main characters, Sven Nykvist did the cinematography, and the quintessential Bergman actors Erland Josephson and Gunnar Björnstrand appear briefly in small, wordless roles. Ingmar Bergman had directed almost fifty films by the time he made Autumn Sonata in 1978, and in some ways - its intimate scale, emotional density, and clarity of expression - this somber drama is typical of his work. When you have verified that the combination hasn’t been altered from the one it had when originally purchased, there may be a quick fix to the problem. You should also check with anyone who has access to the safe to be sure they have not changed the combination. It may seem like useless advice, but sometimes, if you divert your attention to another task for a short period, the thing you are trying to remember will suddenly return. If you simply can’t remember the combination for the safe, take a break. The first step to getting the safe open is to identify the problem. When a homeowner or business manager has problems opening a combination safe it can be stressful, but don’t panic or begin taking drastic measures that could damage the lock mechanism.
